Shocking Train Accident.

AN OLD MAN KILLED. [By Telegraph.] (Per Press Association.) Hawera, This day. A shocking train accident occurred at Mangawhero bridge, by which William Ramsey, an old man, lost his life. As the down evening train approached the bridge the eftgine driver saw a man's head a little above the level of the rails, and did all in his power to stop. This, however, could not be done, and the cowcatcher caught the man's head and knocked him off the bridge on to the bank below. The train was stopped and put back, and it was found that the man was dead, with his head shattered and his brains smeared over the cowcatcher. He had also broken his leg and arm in the fall. It is surmised that he was taken by surprise on the bridge (which has no planks for pedestrians) and in an attempt to escape got caught. The body was brought into Hawera and an inquest will be held to-morrow.
