The Coleman Challenge Shield.
HASTINGS VICTORIOUS
The Hastings Rifles representative team left for Napier at 8 o'clock yesterday morning by the " Pioneer," and returned at 7-30 last evening covered with glory, having been successful in winning the Coleman Shield by a decided majority of 40 points. The other teams competing were the Napier Rifles, the Napier Navals and the F. Battery. The shooting was not up to the standard of the May competitions, the light not being good and the wind a little baffling to an inexperienced shot. The team is to be congratulated on bringing so handsome a trophy to the town. The Town Band turned out last evening to honor the victors and congratulations were freely showered on the competitors. An invitation tea w : as accorded the team at Charlton's Hotel, where a splendid spread was done full justice to. On the range afternoon tea was provided by the Napier ladies, and the Hastings reps, speak very highly of the manner in which they were treated. The following are the scores: — Hastings Rifles.
