CUP DAY. [By Telegraph.] CBy Our Special Reporter. ) Christchurch, Nov. 9. There was beautiful weather for the opening day of the spring mAiijg. The attendance was enormous. TFhere were everywhere signs of prosperity, and it was the best-dressed gathering ever seen on a racecourse in the colony. The totalisator put up a record for the day, nearly £19,000 going through the machines. There were a number of Napier and Hastings " sports " on the course. There was great excitement over the Cup. Euroclydon looked the very picture of a winner, and was installed a firm favorite, some heavy commissions coming in. The Shrew was one of the least fancied in the race. The following are the results : Hurdles, 2 miles. Social Pest ... ... 1 Belmont... ... ... 2 Ilex 3 Ivapua was scratched. Liberator, Clarence, and Tally-ho were the other starters. Won easily. Time, 3min 53sec. Div, £2 18s. Maiden, 1 mile. Uniform ... ... 1 Plotter 2 Tutanekai ... ... 3 Daredevil, Prospect, Grand Cross, St Florent, and Diploma also started. Although Mr Ormond's representative got away well he was not fast enough for the held, Uniform coming away when asked and winning by three lengths. Time, lmin 43 l-ssecs. Div., £1 15s (kl. N.Z. Cup. A splendid race. Mahaki led into the straight, when Defiance took command and looked all over a winner, being only beaten by the first two in the last few strides. The Possible was blocked a furlong from home, and would probably have won had all been clear. He was a good fourth. Ngatuere dropped dead rounding into the straight from heart disease.
