NAPIER NOTES.

[Fkom Ouk Own Correspondent.] Napikk, November 3. Yesterday I sent you an item chronicling a valedictory social to Mr Briggs of Port Ahuriri. The unspeakable comp. made it " Puggs !'' The Napier hospital returns for September are as follows :—ln hospital at last date 15 males and 12 females ; admitted during month, 17 males and 8 females ; total, 32 males and 20 females, Discharged. 12 males and 6 females; dead, 2 males and 2 females; total. 14 males and 8 females. Remaining at date, 18 males and 12 females. An amusing incident occurred here yesterday afternoon. Mr Carnell rather reluctantly permitted himself to be interviewed by Mr G. H. Swan and Mr G. Cross, on behalf of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, but took the precaution to have a prominent prohibitionist on the spot, so that lie could not be "trapped," as he expressed it. The sight of the P.P. rather disconcerted the deputation, which suddenly discovered that one of its number had gone to Auckland and that the other was up the street. So His "\\ orship held the fort and sparred with Mr Carnell while George went away to get Mr Hindmarsh (or warn him not to come). Eventually it was discovered that Mr Hindmarsli could not be found, whereupon Mr Carnell turned the tables by asking a number pertinent questions as to whether Mr McLean had been approached in a similar manner, &c. Somewhat irrelevant replies were given, whereupon Napier's representative is alleged to have placed his index finger along the right side of his proboscis and remarked : " Look here Swan, I'm rather too old a bird to be caught with chaff." His Worship retaliated that he also was no cygnet, and the meeting abruptly adjourned. At a meeting of the Wanderers' Bicycle Club last night. Mr IL 1). 1). M'Lean presiding. eight new members were elected.
