SPORTING NEWS.
[By Gipsy Grand.] Nominations for the Wellington Cup closed to-day. Final payments for the N.Z. Cup, Oaks, Derby, and Welcome Stakes are due on Thursday. The Referee comments on the paltry £4 granted to C. Mitchell out of the Injured Jockeys' Fund. The matter was first ventilated in my notes a few weeks ago. Ngatuere lias been well supported for the Cup during the week. About £4OO was sent from Wellington in one day for tickets in Tattersall's sweep on the Melbourne Cup. Mahaki, Lorelei, Quiltiri, Man-o'-War, Epaulet, Day Star and Crimson Streak are expected to fall out of the Cup on Thursday. " Spectator," in the Referee does not give Kapua or Tally-110 a chance in the first hurdle race at Riccarton. My opinion is that whatever puts them down will win. Derrett will ride The Shrew in the Cup. T. Connop will be on Lotion, P. White will pilot Saracen, The Possible will have the assistance of Lindsay, and the cerise jacket will be on Kingan. Gardiner, a Caulfield jockey, and his wife have drawn Newhaven in Tattersall's big sweep. The Melbourne Cup is at hand once more and to-morow's sun will set on many thousand sad hearts who were going to back the winner if something or another had not happened or if someone had not put them off. It is the old, old, story, and I suppose it will be ever thus. Like all Melbourne Cups, many thousandsof pounds will be lost and won, and when the day of reckoning comes round winners will be in the minority. The race bears the usual brand —" very open." Twenty-eight horses remain in the race, but it is quite possible that at leasthalf-a-dozen will fallout before the flag is dropped. The Robinson Crusoe horse heads the list, and. with 9st 21b, cannot have a chance with some lower down the list. That right good gelding, Hopscotch, may find his burden too great. Bloodshot, who ran unplaced in the Stakes on Saturday, will find the distance too far. Disfigured, the aged daughter of Malua, by her victory on the opening day, must be given a chance. Mr Horden's only representative—The Skipper—did not run up to expectations in the Hotham Handicap. Marusa—brother to Malvolio and Maluma —is not expected to uphold the family reputation. Lower down the list conies the Derby winner with 7st 131b. To my mind this colt will take all the beating possible, and should ward off all challenges with the exception of Broken Hill, who may furnish the winner. The Australian Cup of 1894 was ca,ptured by Richmond's son. He has done nothing since then; but, like the Caulfield Cup winner—Cremorne —has been "lying dark on the wfcather bow." The Chevalier stands high in the betting market, and if that is any indication of his chance, the son of Lochie'l must be reckoned with. Coil, on the Derby performance, is held safe by Newhaven. Trentham has a good outside chance. Of those at the bottom of list I prefer Resolute, Rosolla. and Reka. After deliberation, I expect to-morrow's great race will result as follows : N EWHAVEN Broken Hill Resolute. With Reka likely to upset the pot.

DAY STAR. [By Telegraph.] Auckland. This clay. From a telegram sent here by Mr Morrin it is understood that Day Star is an unlikely starter for the N.Z. Cup.
