NAPIER NOTES.

[From Our Own Correspondent.] Napier, September 30. A telegram received in Napier yesterday announced the death an erstwhile Napier resident, Mr Alex. Weir, who was contracting in this district for some time. Mr Flyger, who was fined £4 and costs last week in his absence up country for being the owner of a house used for immoral purposes, applied to the Magistrate for a rehearing yesterday. In the absence of an important witness another adjournment was necessitated. The Hawke's Bay Amateur Athletic Club, one of the worst managed shows in the district, closed the entries for its October meeting at one day's notice last night. The entries were naturally small and have been extended. An alleged " Young New Zealanders' " social was given in the Gaiety Theatre last night in aid of the funds of the Catholic Church. There was a good attendance, and the affair passed off most successfully. It makes me mad, however, to see young New Zealanders dragged in to give prestige to every tin-pot show! The Musin entertainment in the Theatre Eoyal last night was again poorly attended. The staff of one newspaper oflice in town appeared almost i'/i )iiassi> in the dress circle. The performance is really one of the best of its kind we have had for years, but there is a popular prejudice against the methods of certain people which is evinced by staying away from the generality of performances no matter how good they are.
