GENERAL ITEMS. Auckland, August 20. This morning Mrs Randell, a widow, aged 50, was found dead in bed at Devenporfc. She retired to rest as usual on the previous night. She had a wound two inches long across the throat. Close to her right hand was a very sharp tomahawk of her own. Dr Robers said she bad been dead three hours and the wounds appeared selfinflicted. New Plymouth, August 19. Petroleum was struck to-day at 2010 feet, the oil flowing out of the bore. This supply is in sandstone formation and is better than the former oil found in the papa formation. The oil is accompanied by a great presrtre of gas. A thorough test will be made to prove whether payable oil has been found, and if it is payable another bore will fee started in a few days. The drillers are yery sanguine,
