GENERAL ITEMS. Melbouene, August 6. A letter was addressed by the Attor-ney-General to the Supreme Court Judges asking if one desired to be nominated to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Judge Williams replied that he had no objection, and the Premier has forwarded his nominate Mr Chamberlain. August 7. The detectives are attempting to clear up the identity of a man who assaulted and robbed Mr McPhee. Butler, the New Zealand criminal, who was tried and acquitted on the charge, declined to make any admission, but gave the police a plan indicating a spot in Little Collins street, where a search revealed a parcel containing a revolver, ammunition, a butcher's knife, Mr McPhee's watch and chain and a mask. A man named Fen ton has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment and fined £4 on a charge of assaulting the umpire in a recent football match at Collingwood. Brisbane, August 7. A leading firm has decided to despatch steamers with refrigerating space to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and possibly England, with a view to finding an outlet for the northern cattle market. Sydney, August 7. The total revenue is shown in the Railway Commissioners' annual report to be £8,109,000, and the expenditure £1,788,000, so that the profit is equal to t'3 8s lOd per cent. Mahee has been scratched for the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps. The Cricket Association has decided to invite other Australian associations to co-operate with a view to taking united action with regard to the projected visit of the Australian Eleven to Queensland and Tasmania.
