GENERAL NEWS.

——- THE WOOL SALES. DE. DILLON'S ACTION DEFEATS THE EDUCATION ACT. THE ENGLISH ARMAMENT. MR REEVES AND THE STATIST. 11. M. STANLEY DYING. London, July 3. At to-day's wool sales the highest prices of the series were realised. Crossbreds show an advance. At the auction sales 8936 cases of kauri gum were offered, of which 1445 were sold. July 4. Mr Dillon's opposition to the compulsory clauses induced the Government to abandon the Irish Education Act. Mr Gladstone, referring to the increase in the British armament, condemned the wild, wanton, and perilous policy of the Admiralty and hoped that there would be an early return to common sense. The Statist approves the quick realisation of the assets of the Commercial Bank, which will remove a millstone and prepare the way for amalgamation. The Economist considers that the directors have dealt equitably with the conflicting interests, and considers that it is to the interests of depositors to ratify the scheme. The Hon. W. P. Reeves, replying to recent attacks by the Statist, vigorously defends the credit of New Zealand and the efforts of the Government to promote industry and economy. July 5. Mr H. M. Stanley, who has been suffering from gastritis, but who was recovering, has had a relapse, and is now in a critical condition. St Petersburg, July 5. The Czar and Czarina, in accordance with custom, yesterday entered the city in great state. The Czar has partially recovered. Cairo, July 5. The railway has been pushed on to Ferkeh, where the first decisive battle took place and in which the Dervishes received such a tremendous reverse.
