It in rumours <1 that the [Miliee authorities intend to take action in regard to betting shops, ami that evidence has already been obtained to warrant legal proceedings. Barney Souter, Mercury Bay, while playing football against a senior team from Kuaotuna on Saturday, had his leg broken. When the Waihora arrived a considerable crowd assembled on the wharf in anticipation of Kirby being brought off the steamer and taken to Wellington by the Takapuna, which left Onehunga, hut Sergeant Kiely deemed it best to proceed ri-.rht through to Wellington by the Waihora. and the assemblage were disappointed. Kirby is in a forward cabin specially fitted up and was constantly watched on the trip across. lie is in good health and fairly good spirits. At an inquest to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of a female infant found floating in the harbor. Dr. Gordon stated that the child had apparently died of convulsions prior to being put into the harbor. The body was that of an infant a week old. A verdict of " found drowned " was returned. The Melanesian mission yacht Southern Cross has arrived from an island cruse. At all the places called at the missionaries were in good health, and the work of the mission going on successfully. The yacht was ashore at the islands, but got oft" in about four hours without sustaining much damage. On the 6th instant the cook and steward named Thomas Hogan died. Nkt.sox, -June 22. Walter Beattie Thompson, charged with stealing sheep has been committed for trial. CußisTtHrErii, .Tune 22. Among the cases on the list for the present civil sittings of the Supreme Court is one brought by a relative of the late Stephen C'oie Moule to upset a will by which a large endowment has been left to the Old Men's Home at Ashburton. The amount is about £30,000. The case, which is mainly one of law, was relegated to next Banco sittings. It was stated that the case would certainly come before the Court of Appeal. The Christchurch Licensing Committee to-day granted a renewal of the license of the Provincial Hotel to Phillip Mohr, though the licensee was cautioned as to his future conduct. The police opposed the renewal, alleging that the licensee was of intemperate habits. IH'xkdix, -Tune 22. Thirtv-three carters of Ihmedin presented Sir Ward with an address expressing sincere sympathy and the conviction that he would come out all right in the end, despite the unscrupulous efforts of his political and private enemies. At a meeting of the Otago Rugby Union to-night, the following dates were fixed for the Northern tour : August 26th, Oamaru ; August 29th, Canterbury ; Septemt>er Ist. Taranaki. at Hawera : September sth. Auckland; September 9th, Ilawke's Bay; September 12th, Wellington. Requests from a numlier of other unions for matches had to be declined.
