TRAINING NOTE S. [BY Gipsy GRAND.] The coarse was in better condition this morality' although it is still very soft. A large number of horses were worked, including several new arrivals. Mutiny and Chris were sent once round at top. finishing well together. Glengarrv and Scrap Iron 11. were associated for n couple of rounds. Wikitoria, New forest, I a nard. T Lose. The Shearer. Tomoarangi. Napoleon, The Miser. Steel King. St. Kegel. Forty \Vmks. Primula, Solitaire. Midas. Itevolt, ivaika. The Sharper, and Dromedary each put 111 steady work. Spermaceti was put at the big country, but fell at the sod wall. A remount was made, and again the horse blundered at

the brush fence and brought the rider to the ground. Seddon was sent over the big country for once round. lie negotiated the obsta/'U-s in good style. M.\si:ei»l and Slaiden were sent once round .u top, the former having the best of the finish. lIAWKF.'S 15AY JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETING. T'ne following acceptances were received yesterday afternoon Wkltkr, 11 miles.

The Winter Meeting of the Ifawke's Hay Jockey Club opens to-morrow at Hastings. Nearly nil the horses engaged at the meeting are in town. The fields are large in every instance, and Mr i'iper will be hard at in giving tin; word " go." The programme for to-morrow contains six events. T1 le Maiden Steeplechase will be decided first when I expect to see ( ?TAIK!'I win, wi'h his stable companion handy at the finish. The Welter, with l-'i acceptors, is set down second on the programme, and should be won straight out by S YLV AN'l'S. I consider this horse one of the bust in tlui colony under welter weights. Mr Ilenrv has evidently mi-judged the respective merits of Sylvanus and New Forest when be places the latter "ilb abo\e Sylvanus To scratch the horse immediately the weights appeared was Connop's only ilu. rnative. The third event is the Uraeelet. and. from a field of It v. it is no ea>y matler to pi'-k the winner. Scrap Iron. Forty Winks. Tomonrangi and The J.Jtiek have each shown good work on the training track; but I fancy LK.ht will prove too many for the local horses. Should Light not go to the post, I shall expect to see Tomoarangi win. The big hurdles crime oil for decision next, and with the brilliant class or horses engaged the selection of a winner is very difficult. That right good horse. Hopeful heads the list. lam inclined to think that his weight, combine'] with the heavy • going, will prevent him winning. Mutiny and Tiritea f prefer over the big country, lievolt is looking and going well, and with his handy impost will be a difticult horse to beat. Kangipum-hu has been slowed down in his work since his spill a week ago ; his chance, however, cannot be ignored. Canard will be found wanting at the tinisii. Chris, on his Auckland performance. should have a good chance. The Plus.', with lOst. is well treated, and if the way he goes about his work is any line to go on his chance is tip-top. Of those lower down the list I prefer the prospects of Napoleon. To sum up, my final selection is L'kvolt. with Napoleon a likelv horse to pav a div. The Hunt Club Cup. with 15 aspirants, should be the best ev.-irt of theday. Seddon has post of honor, but I prefer Kaika to anything in the race, with Ulysses and Lighthouse the next best. For the last event —the June Handicap —the weights and acceptances are declared on the course, which, at this stage, makes the selection of the winner a verydifficult task. This race. I think, will be won by an outider, and that one may turn up in Mystical. with Slaiden as an emergency.
