“Sorcerer.”
The Comic Opera “ Sorcerer ” is a great favorite with amateurs and has been very strongly cast by the local talent. A great treat is before those in our community who have not yet seen this amusing and popular musical masterpiece. The Sorcerer never fails to draw crowded houses, and has never failed to please the New Zealand public. It has been produced by amateurs in every city and town of this country, and has also been played by most of the big opera companies who have visited our shores. Our troupe has been very fortunate in securing amongst the leading characters in the piece some of the best talent engaged in the representation of Sorcerer in Auckland a few years ago. Every telling point in the plot, and the various comic and mirth-provoking incidents, which are very numerous, are therefore faithfully reproduced, whilst the lovers of sweet music will appreciate the careful training of the various voices both in the solos and choruses. Ths great interest of the performance is created by the administration of a love potion to a number of people of every class. This philter causes them to fall in love with each other indiscriminately, and leads to the most intensely laughable incidents. The culminating point of the first act is the grand incantation scene “ midst flames and fire ” around the magic teapot. The numerous mistakes and illassorted engagements that arise from the philter are cleverly put to rights in the second act by the descent of the Sorcerer into the unknown abyss, from whence comes the smell of brimsome
