COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present— Crs Clark (Chairman), Orr, Coleman, King, Twohey, and Murphy. DOG BEGISTKATION. The Dog Registrar reported that he had been informed native dogs were very troublesome at Mangatu and elsewhere, and he asked for an advance of £lO to enable him to summons tne owners of unregistered dogs. Cr Twohey moved, and Cr King seconded, that the Registrar be instructed to ascertain the names of persons owning unregistered dogs. REMOVAL OF BRIARS, A letter was received from the Waikohu Road Board, calling the Board’s attention to the briars lying about on the Patutahi-Wai-kohu road, between the junction of the Or mond-Opotiki road and Mr Lambert’s gate, which were a great nuisance to the travelling public, and also to persons driving sheep along the road. The Board suggested that the road in question should be ploughed, or otherwise the briars would be as bad as they were before. The Board also agreed as to the necessity of eradicating the bathurst burr, and would endeavor to keep their roads free from the pest. Councillors thought it would improve the growth of the briars if the ground were ploughed. No action was taken. RIVERSIDE BOAD. The Whataupoko Road Board wrote asking the Council to take over as a county road the road known as the Riverside road, from its junction with the Ormond main road to the Waimata river at the Pouawa ford. The original Waimata Road Board had expended nearly £4OO on it, and it was the outlet for the whole of the settlers at Pouawa and the upper parts of Whataupoko. The Board had applied lor a loan of £3OO for the purpose of metalling the road, which sum would be handed to the Council if the road was taken over. Cr Coleman did not see how the Council could afford to maintain the road as only a half-penny rate had been struck, but he •uggested that £5O be set down on the estimates for the work. The request was refused. SUPPLY OF STONE. The Borough Council wrote asking the Council to co-operate with them in obtaining a supply of 5000 yards of metal from Barker’s quarry It was thought if the quantity could be increased to 8000 yards a contractor would be found willing to lay a tramway line, and the cost would not exceed 0b per yard. The offer was made on the assumption that the Council would supply for the tramway the rails which it had in store. The Engineer said the stone was not of such good quality as that obtained from Patutahi. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to furniih further details of the scheme. A PETITION. A petition was received from seven settlers at Tiniroto requesting the Council to provide a means of access from the County road to their respective properties. The holdings were on the deferred payment system,- and the Council was entitled to an allowance on each section taken up. The Clerk said no money had ever been received from Government on account of Deferred Payment sections. Cr Coleman moved that an application be made to the Government for the amount due th the Council under the Deferred Payment system. SUPPLY OF BEACH SHINGLE. The Engineer said he had made application to the Harbor Board for a supply of shingle at 2s 6d per yard, but the Board could not supply it at a less cost than 3s per yard. Cr Twohey would like to see the work tendered for, so that contractors might have a show. Cr Coleman moved that the matter be left to the Engineer. If the work could be tendered for he could call for tenders, if not he could make arrangements with the Harbor Board. Cr King seconded.—Carried. TBNDBBS. The following tenders were received for the undermentioned works:— Carting 300 yards metal from Ormond quarry to Waerenga-a-hika: R. Knox, Is 7d per yard (accepted); Jones and McDonald, 2s 6d ; P.
