An Elaborate Testimonial.
We have been shown a beautifully-illuminated testimonial which is to be presented to Mr H, C. Boylan, Honorary Captain of the J Battery, on Thursday evening, as a suitable memento of the esteem in which that gentleman is held by the members of the corps. The lettering and illuminating work has been done by Mr R. M. Ballantyne (formerly of Gisborne) whose cleverness in this line is well-known, and his accomplishment in this instance is but another proof, though a most artistic one, of that gentleman’s capabilities. The lettering is tastefully done and the illuminated border is a brilliant achievement. The frame *s also in keeping with the other work, and was executed at Mr Townley’s warehouse. The testimonial is as follows, and will speak for itself:—
Presented to Honorary Captain H. C. Boylan, J Battery, N.Z.V.A. The undersigned members of the J Battery, N.Z.V.A., beg your acceptance of this slight tribute of their esteem and respect—esteem of yourself as a gentleman, and respect as due to "an officer who, during his connection with volunteering has done so much to foster and keep up the statues of a corps which now claims and is admitted to be one of the most efficient in New Zealand. Th? date of your oommission as Captain Inaugurated a period of success, not alone financially, but also in a marked growth of popularity resulting in the corps being in a flourishing condition. Bogret, you may feel assured, is felt that circumstances compelled you to resign a position, the duties of which you so honorably and faithfully fulfilled, but hope is expressed that you as honorary Captain for life, will continue for many years to take the same keen interest in the welfare of the Battery that you have during the past. It would la an orais. siun should a record of your services be unmentioned, proving as it should to all volunteers an incentive to emulation. —Joined Nov. 6, 1878; subsequently Corporal, Sergeant, Quarter-Master Sergeant, Sergeant-Major, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, and then Captain.—Resigned, April 23, 1888.—Unanimously elected Honorary Captain for life, 1888.
