The J Battery.

Ths following letters have passed between M H. C. Boylan and the Defence Department :— Gisborne, July 6, 1888-

Sib,—As some weeks have elapsed since an enquiry was held here by Lieutenant Colonel Shepherd, into certain allegations preferred against me in my capacity as Captain of the J Battery N.Z. Artillery, by Major Porter, the officer Commanding the District, I have the honor to respectfully request that you will b c pleased to intimate to me at your earliest convenience the result of such enquiry. I observe by the Government Gazette that His Excellency has been pleased to accept my resignation from the Battery, but beyond that I am left in ignorance as to the position I stand in, with regard to the enquiry into my conduct, d e manded and obtained by Major Porter. A 8 an old volunteer officer, I feel averse to remaining in this dubious position, as to the charges made against me, and with the object, therefore, of having the matter finally closed, I beg to make the request contained herein.—l have, etc., H, C. Boylan. Defence Office, Wellington, July 10, 1888. Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated the 6th inst, with reference to an enquiry held at Gisborne by Lieutenant Colonel Shepherd re certain allegations stated to have been preferred agains you, when Captain of the J Battery, by Major Porter, and requesting to be informed of the result of the said enquiry, and in reply to state that the fact of your resignation having been gazetted, is of itself a practical answer that there was nothing proved against you which required further investigation. Major Porter, as officer Commanding the District, was duly communicated with on the subject of the Court of Enquiry, this being the usual course observed in dealing with matters of this nature.—l have, etc., C. A. Humfbbt, Assist. U.S. Defence.
