Thomas Carter, ex fireman, ex cabman, ex policeman, has announced himself for Wellington East. Tnis is the customary electioneering joke. A proposal to organise a Company to purchase the New Zealand Times and Press and amalgamate them has fallen through. Mr Wakefield was coming out for Wellington South, but the non-success of this Company has altered his p'ans. He will probably not stand for any seat. Political news is absolutely nil. The weather has killed all interest in business and politics. Tradesmen speak feelingly on the state of trade, and the Times this morning rebukes the electors upon their apathy in political mattsrs. The Government are spending no money, possibly because they have none to spend. Government matters are virtually at a standstill all over the Colony.

Napier, Last Night. Arthur Desmond, the working man’s candidate, and strong and ever rabid disciple of Henry George, will contest Hawkes Bay with Captain Russell.

Auckland, last night. R. Jury the candidate for Newton, now employed in the Government Railway workshops has been dismissed for engaging in politics. The Trades and Labour Council regret the fact that any workman aspiring to benefit his fellow-men should be the means of depriving him of his living, and they will wire to the Public Works Minister asking him to enquire into the matter.
