political news. [special to the STANbARb.] . . Wellington, last night. News is being received irotti all pafts of the Colony of the energy which is being shown in electioneering matters. Both parti.es are particularly active, ffiost of tKe Government men going on the Protectionist ticket. ( In the Wanganui district things are particularly lively. Mr Carson, the proprietor of the local morning rag, is working hard. He is very popular, and will get all the religious and temperance support. Fbr all that Ballance is supposed to have the best chance. Bryce is opposed by three men, George Hutchinson, a Wanganui lawyer, and son of old William Hutchinson, who sat some years until he was ousted by George Fisher. William Handly and Morgan also stand, but have bo chance of success. Atkinson is being hotly opposed by Fblik McGiiire of who is very popular, and would make a good district log roller. Atkinson will have a hard struggle to get in. John Stevens, a Ballanceite, is standing against Bruce, an Oppositionist, for the Rangatikei seat. Messrs D. Goldie, Chairman of the local Education Board, and J. M. Shera are amongetthe candidates for Auckland City West. Samuel Vaile of Railway reform is out for Auckland North. Mr W, McCardle of Masterton is standing in the Government interest for the Woodville seat.

Mr A. W. Reeves of the Lyttelton Times will contest the St Albans seat in the Vogel interest. Branches of the Electors* Reform AssdciatiOu an opposition society to the Political Reform Association have been fornied all over Canterbury. McMurdo one of the candidates for Rodney advocates the immediate sale of all the colony’s railways.

Major Bunny is standing against Beetham for the Wairarapa North constituency. Mr William Hutchinson (late of Wellington) will contest the Roslyn (Dunedin) seat. Larnach for the Peninsula, and Barron for Caversham are. as yet, unopposed. Scobie McKenzie (Mt. Ida) and Pyke (Dunstan) have also no opponents up to the present.
