THE GREYMOUTH FLOODS.
RELIEF TO SUFFERERS — DISTRESS UNDER-RATED. Greymouth, last night. A public meeting was held on Saturday night to consider what steps could be taken to assist the sufferers by the late floods, Hie Worship the Mayor being in the chair. The Borough Council voted £5O, the Midland Railway £lO, Myers and Co. (Wellington) £5 ss, Thompson, Shannon and Co. (Wellington) £lO 10s, A. Beaver (Dunedin) £2 2s, Pinkerton (Wellington) £5O. The subscriptions in the room amounted to nearly £l6O. On Sunday the Mayor took round some eighty blankets and a quantity of food to some of the worst cases. Tue distress is worse than at first anticipated. A BIG GOLD RETURN.—A SUDDEN DEATH. Dunedin, last night. The monthly escort brought down eight cases and one bag of gold valued at £BO,OOO. At the inquest on the body of John Anderson, who was working at Mr Larnaoh’s place, and who was found dead, the evidence showed that deceased died from the effects of a fit. A verdict was returned accordingly.
