NOBEL PRIZES

STOCKHOLM, Nov 4. The Swedish Academy has decided to shelve this year's Nobel Prize for literature beacuse it was hopelessly nonplussed over the four top candidates, including Mr Winston Churchill and the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce. Dr. Hideki Yukaaw, a 42-year-old Japanese, was awarded the Nobel Prize for his contribution to atomic physics. It was the first time a' prize had been awarded to a Japanese. Dr. Yukawa arrived in America 13 months ago and has been Professor of theoretical physics at Columbia University, New, York. Professor William Francis Giauque of California, won the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Professor Giauque won the award mainly for his wood the effects of the extremely low temperatures on basic elements. Among other successes, he elaborated a method of obtaining extra low temperatures in the region of absolute zero. The award is valued at £10,700.
