GOLF N.Z LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP COMMENCES

P.A INVERCARGILL, Nov 3. A brief shower which served only to freshen the atmosphere, airways, and green was the only disturbing factor at Otatara this morning' when the major event the 46th New Zealand Golf meeting started. There were more than 130 players some competing in Championship, and others in the first round of the Bogey Handicap and Rattray Cup. Eight seeded players survived first round. Early returns showed the visiting Australians were in form, Miss J. I. Fletcher returning one over the scratch 37 for the first half, nad Miss P. Borthwick one over scratch on the inward journey. Miss Cheney beat Miss Vivian, a succesful Christchurch player, who reduced her handicap fro 13 to three in one season, three and two. The title holder Mrs Jackson Ball Wanganui, won three and two from a young Aucklander, Miss Margaret Hughes, who had a very shaky start but settled later to play sound golf. Mrs J. E. Salisbury had an exciting tussle with Mrs A. H. McDonald (Hamilton) the game going to 18th Mrs R. S. Fullerton-Smih former N.Z. title holder, had an easy win and Miss Clare Smith, playing on her old home links, won four and three from Miss Helen Buchanan, runner up in this event last year. Mrs N. D. Culen (Invercargill Ladies Club Champion) won from the former Southlander, Miss Phena Guest one up. LATER: In the remainder of the play in the first round of the women's golf championship there were no upsets. The quality of the golf in many matches more than satisfied those who had hoped to see an eclipse of a champion or a seeded player. All of the Australian visitors) played golf which delighted the galleries. The Australains did not, however, dominate the scene as they did in the foursomes the previous day. The limelight was probably stolen by a young Auckland competitor. Miss Margaret Hughes, who forced the New Zealand cahmpion, Mrs Jackson Ball to play at her brilliant best to survive the first round. The sinking of two long putts at the thirteenth and fourteenth later was the turning point of the match.

All of the Australians but one, won. They all had something to spare except Miss Betty Kernot, the manager of the team ,who was eliminated by Miss P. Borth.vick, after an excellent game. Mrs Jacobson (Auckland) and Miss Vivian (Christchurch) compelled their Australian opponents, Misses J. E. Percy and B. Cheney, respectively to fight hard for their entry into the second round. In the bogey round played in the afternoon, Miss Borthwick finished 2 up, being round in 75, to take the prize. "Miss Kernot was also 2 up with 78, and Miss Percy 1 up with 76.
