BRITISH ELECTIONS NOT TILL 1950
(Rec. 9.10). LONDON, October 4. There will be no British general election in 1949, says the political correspondent of the Labour Party organ, the Daily Herald. He adds: “The expectations of an autumn general election have been created by the wishful thinking of Tory press and politicians. Those expectations ar e receding. There has never been any solid basis for these wild predictions of the views of the Labour leadership on this, matter. The plain facts are that, on the known circumstances of the situation, both at home and international, there will be no general election this year. Unforeseeable circumstances might arise which would justify a speedy appeal to the country, but- only the most serious threat to th e national wellbeing, which could only be met by an appeal to the nation, would upset the Government’s determination for a spring election”.
