N.Z. EXOTIC TIMBER EXPORT TO AUSTRALIA

EXCHANGE FOR HARDWOODS P.A. WELLINGTON, August 23. People had continued to criticise the Government for allowing any timber to leave the country while the domestic demand was not fully satisfied, but it did not seem to be realised by the general public that our exports at present were purely in the nature of an exchange for essential Australian hardwoods, said the Commissioner of State Forests, Hon. C. F. Skinner, addressing the Dominion Sawmillers’ Federation. Mr Skinner was commenting on the export of exotic timber to Australia. He said that, because more shipping had become available, the quantity shipped to Australia had risen substantially. Negotiations were now under way for the organisation of a substantial export trade through the port of Tauranga. The first shipment, a trial one, would leave Tauranga by the James Cook in September.
