SUGAR RATIONING ENDS THIS WEEK
Ample Stocks WELLINGTON, August 23. "As from the end of this week, sugar rationing as it affects domestic consumers, will cease”. This announcement w<3 macje by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, to-day. The Minister added: “I wish to make it clear that it is possible that in some areas the supply may not be sufficient to meet all demands immediately, but the general supply position is now such as to enable the Government to decide upon the termination of sugar rationing”. The Minister appealed to the public to refrain from making large demands upon their grocers as soon as rationing was lifted. “There will be ample stocks coming forward to meet all requirements, including additional demands at the jam season, and no good purpose will be served by buying unduly large quantities”, said the Minister. So far as manufacturers were concerned, it was intended that rationing would continue for approximately two months, he said. It might be possible to reduce that period, but it was thought desirable that the consumer demand should first be met before increases were made available for manufacturing purposes.
