Old Grey Residents Celebrate Golden Wedding

Mr and Mrs E. Jones, old residents of Greymouth on Sunday celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding which took. place at Holy Trinity Church, Greymouth, on May 9, 1898. when the Ven. Archdeacon. J. R. York officiated. To celebrate the anniversary, Mr and Mrs Jones were entertained at an evening on Saturday, at the home of their daughter, Mrs J. Carter, Holland Settlement, Cobden. There were about thirty guests present including Mr and Mrs H. Jones of Golden Bay, son and daugh-ter-in-law of the bride and groom. Mr S. Compton, brother-in-law of the bride, proposed the toast to the happy couple and in a neat speech congratulated them on reaching fifty years of married life, and hoped that he and Mrs Compton, who was incidentally, the bridesmaid and sister of the bride, would also reach this goal. The bridegroom suitably replied. A lovely two-tiered, cake decorated in pink and gold was then cut. Items were given by Mr J. Hickling. Mr and Mrs McKenzie, and Mrs J. Fitzpatrick. The bride, Miss Sarah Goodall, was born in Greymouth, and is a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Edward Goodall, also of Greymouth. The bridegroom, Mr E. Jones, was born in Adelaide, Australia and came to' Lyttelton with his parents to reside 'in 1877. He has been a resident of Greymouth since 1890.
