VAST COAL DEPOSITS IN THE ANTARCTIC, SAYS BYRD

WASHINGTON, April 14. Rear-Admiral Byrd’s expedition flagship, Mount Olympus, arrived today at the naval dock in Potomac River. Rear-Admiral Byrd, looking ruddy and fit after his fourth Antarctic expedition, was met by the. Naval Secretary, Mr Forrestal, Fleet Admiral Nimitz and Vice-Admiral Forrest Sherman, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations. WASHINGTON, April 15. “Within twenty-five years we could go after the resources in Antarctica,” said Admiral Byrd, interviewed on his return to America. “There was an awful lot of coal there, and nobody knows what other resources may lie hidden under the ice.’” He also suggested exploiting the vast icecap as a natural refrigerator for the storage of surplus crops in bumper years. Admiral Byrd added that he has not yet decided whether to recommend official United States action towards establishing part of the Antarctic as American territory.
