ASIATIC CONGRESS OPENED IN INDIA BY GOVERNMENT LEADER
NEW DELHI, March 23.
Pandit Nehru (India), opening the Inter-Asian Conference at New Delhi to-day warned the delegates from 32 countries that in this atomic age Asia must function effectively in' maintaining peace. The conference should work towards the ideal of “one world” and world-wide peace and progress. Arabs, Jews, Vietnamese, Indonesians and Thibetans in flowing robes and plaited hair were among the 230 delegates present. Mrs Arojini Haidu, th chief Indian delegate was the first chairman. The conference officially is nonpolitical, but it is reported that the Vietnamese representative will submit a memorandum on “freedom of movement in Vietnam.” NEW DELHI, March 23.
At least one person was killed and several were injured when the police fired to disperse rioters in Old Delhi to-day. Sikhs and Moslems clashed on the occasion of Pakistan Day which the Moslems were celebrating. Reuter’s correspondent at Rawalpindi quotes a Northern Command communique as saying more than 18,000 Indian troops and 2000 British troops, also two air squadrons are being used to stamp out the Punjab communal strife.
