CHARGE OF MINING CORFU CHANNEL AGAINST ALBANIA
NEW YORK, March 22,
Belgium, in the Security Council to-day, joined Colombia and Australia in asserting the belief that Albania must have had knowledge of the laying of the mines in the Corfu Channel which resulted on October' 22 in the deaths of 44 British sailors. The American delegate, Mr Herschel Johnson, during further consideration of the British complaint that the mines were illegally laid by Albania, urged the Security Council to condemn Albania for “tolerating” mines in the Corfu Chan-rel; but suggested that the British charge that Albania connived at the laying of the mines should be amended to read that Albania merely knew that, mines had been laid.
M. Gromyko (Russia) earlier said that the British charge was so weak that he did not know whether a complaint should be laid against Albania or Britain. He suggested that British hatred of Albania might possibly have driven the British to lay the mines themselves in order to’ build up a case against Albania. The discussion was adjourned until March 25
