Government Ships Proposed to be For Commonwealth

SYDNEY Marell, 24

Plans for developing a Commonwealth shipping line were considered by the Federal Cabinet, said the Minister of Transport, Mr E. J. Ward. Addressing the Eastern Suburbs regional conference of the Australian Labour Party, he announced that, the Government intended to develop a national shipping line and that attention would be given to the coastal trade. Ships in the inter-island trade were being operated at present by the Government under private companies, but 'it was the intention of the Government to establish administrative control. The constitutional position was T some doubt, but it might be the same with airlines, where the Government could not nationalise all airlines, but could run its own service.
