TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD. HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the Greymouth Townswomen’s Guild was held on Wednesday. The annual report and balance-sheet, which showed the Guild had justified its formation, were received and adopted. The president (Mrs Pearson), in her annual report, stated that the Appeal Day held during the year was a great success, and together with the funds from the Flower Day, realised £240. The only circle operating during the year was- the Gardening Circle, which showed enthusiasm from the day it was formed. Interesting lectures on culture of different flowers were given by Mrs O. Jackson, and demonstrations of floral work were given by Mrs R. Steele. Gardening ideas were exchanged, and sprays were presented to the performers at monthly Guild meetings, and flowers were s-ant to members who were in hospital. Anol her activity carried out by the Guild was for two members to visit the hospital at intervals during the .month, distributing magazines to the sick'. This work- was much appreciated by tlie patients,
The election of officers for 1 the ensuing year resuited as follows: President, Mrs M. J. Fogarty; vice-presi-dent, Mrs- A. M. Walters; secretary, Mrs P. Joyce; treasurer, Mrs T. Higgins (re-elected); committee, Mesdames W. Clarke, R. Mathieson, J. Steele, L. H. Bohmann, J. Crowe, Jones, R. Smith, J. A. Pearson, A. McKay, and Miss Murphy. Last year’s president, Mrs Fearson, and the secretary, Mrs Shallcrass, did not seek re-election.
Miss Murphy, on behalf of members, thanked the outgoing committee for their work during the past year, pointing out that the first year of any organisation entailed a great deal of work. Bouquets were presented to the retiring president (Mrs Pearson), secretary (Mrs F. Shallcrass), and the treasurer (Mrs Higgins). Prior to the annual meeting, ordinary business was dealt with, the retiring president asking for a discussion on the formation of circles for the coming year, and suggesting arts and crafts, musical, play reading, and bridge. Much interest in the suggestions was taken by members, and it was left to the incoming committee to convene a meeting of these circles. A letter was received from the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham), in connection with the war memorial for Greymouth. *lt was decided to appoint delegates to the meeting this month.
After the business had been finished, members enjoyed items by Mrs McMasters.
An exhibit of decorative vases and dahlias by the gardening circle was much admired, Mesdames Jones, Fairmaid and Joyce being the winners in these exhibits.
Mi's F. A. Kitchingham, patron of the Guild, said she had been dubious, at the outset, of its utility, in view of the many other women’s organisations, but she was glad to say the Guild had exceeded her expectations, and proven of great assistance on the occasion of patriotic and other public calls. She co-ngratulated the members and wished the Guild every success.
