BLACKBALL NOTES

BLACKBALL March 21

Mrs C. Nuttall, Hart Street, has been visiting Christchurch, where she attended the wedding of her second son, Gordon Nuttall. Mr and Mrs John Leitch, of Wellington have been visiting relations in Blackball.

Mr S. R. Burns, of Christchurch, who has been a visitor to Blackball as the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Mountford, Main Road, has left on return.

Mrs E. Brownlie, who has been visiting Mrs J. Clark, Stafford St., has left on return. Mi- D. Kidd, Reefton, was a visitor over the week-end.

Mr W. Lowery, South Belt Street, is at preesnt at patient in the Greymouth Hospital. The annual meeting of the Blackball Rugby League Club was held last Sunday. Mr A. Kennedy presided over a large attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing season resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr J'. Haisty junior; President, Mr R. Gardiner; chairman (held over); secretary, Mr W. Mountford; Treasurer, Mr L. Kinsella; committee, Messrs J. Dodds, A. McDougall, A. MacGougan, G. Shand, W. Day, E. Bassett, R. Simpson, J. Lee, and R. Neilson; delegates to the Centre— Messrs R. Neilson and J. Walker Club Captain, Mr W. Day. The following coaches were appointed: senior, Mr J. Dodds; junior, Mr W. McNaughton; third grade, Mr E. Bassett; fourth grade, Mr W. Kells. A donation of £2 2s was made to the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade. The annual meeting of the Labour Party took place in the Oddfellows Hall on Thursday evening. Dr. Aylward presided over a fair attendance. The balance sheet was submitted and endorsed. Much discussion took place regarding the forthcoming picnic to Totara Flat. Delegates were present in connection with this: from Roa, Messrs W. Heyward and D. McFarlane, and from Ngahere, Mr W. Andre. A committee of three were appointed to make the picnic arrangements.

The election of officers resulted as follows; President, Dr. Aylward; vice president, Mr R. Clarke; secretary, Mrs M. Perrin; treasurer, Mrs M. Aylward; committee: Mesdames E. McDonald, D. Beale, H. Allen, F. Mason, Messrs R. Neilson, A. MacGougan, J. Feeney, J. Stenhouse and G. K. Keown.

It was agreed to write the Member for the district (Hon. J. O’Brien) regarding 4 the proposed new water scheme.

The Blackball Sports Club is holding its annual sports rneeing on the Blackball Domain to-day. Much interest has ben shown locally in the cycle racing events, especially, is this the case in the boys’ race from Ngahere. The chopping events are sure to draw all the old favourites from the Coast centres and we are sure to see some of the young ‘bloods’ in action too. There is a big programme of events and patrons are sure of a good day’s entertainment. The Greymouth Highland Pipe Band will be in attendance. This evening the annual ball will be held in the M’nerS’’ Hall.

Mr William Cropp of Hokitika, has taken up his duties on the teaching staff at the local State School. A large number of local school children went to Greymouth yesterday morning to take part in the country primary school sports. They were under the personal charge of headmaster (Mr R. Buchan) assisted by Messrs- B. Gilland and W. Cropp junior teachers.
