HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent J HOKITIKA, August 26. Kokatahi beat Excelsior by 11 points to nil in the only senior grade game played in the Westland Rugby Sub-Union last week-end. Conditions were by no means good for open football, the ground being heavy following the recent rains. In Hokitika, the only game played was the fourth grade fixture between St. Mary’s and School, St. Mary’s winning by 27 points to 3. The ground was in bad condition, and in places was covered with water. At Kumara, Blaketown, winners of the West Coast junior competition, defeated Excelsior, winners of the Westland junior competition, by 9 points to nil. The m.v. Gael, which arrived in the roadstead on Sunday afternoon from Wellington, was unable to work the port because of rough seas on the bar. She put out to sea, returning to Hokitika at 9 a.m. yesterday, but was again unable to effect an entry. If conditions improve, it is expected that she will berth at 10 a.m. to-day. Captain J. M. Reeves is in command of the vessel, relieving Captain McKenzie. After discharging inward cargo, the Gael will load silver pine posts for northern ports. Heavy seas along the coast have had their effect on whitebait runs at Hokitika, and so far this season only small catches have been recorded. Fishermen do not expect an improvement until more favourable weather conditions are experienced.
