NEW GOODS SERVICE
BETWEEN GREYMOUTH AND HOKITIKA Messrs W. Greenhill and Co., Ltd., of Greymouth, have been granted authority to conduct a goods transport service between Hokitika and return by the No. '3 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr S. V. Raines. The decision of the authority was reserved when the company applied for permission to conduct the service, objections being lodged by the Railway Department and a Hokitika carrier. The service will be commenced as soon as possible, but a number of details have yet to be arranged regarding a depot in Hokitika. It has been decided to make a single daily trip each way. When announcing his decision, Mr Raines stated that he was chiefly concerned with the welfare of people living along the Greymouth-Hokitika route, and thought that they were entitled to a better service for the transportation of goods than was at present available. He felt that a route licence would pll a definite need. A complete examination of all aspects of the - case was made, and it was felt that neither the railways nor the locah carriers would be affected by the service, as’ there were only twelve railway stations between Greymouth and Hokitika, only one of which was controlled by a resident officer.
