REEFTON NOTES

COUNTY COUNCIL MEETS [Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON,- August 26. Reporting to the Inangahua County Council, the foreman (Mr N. Bolitho) said that because of wet weather, it was found impossible to carry out many repairs to Andrew’s bridge and Raglan’s bridge at Blair’s however, the bridge had been washed away. On the Murray Creek road a large slip has again occurred at the Defiance Mine, where the contractor had previously cleared one. The foreman regarded the slip as highly dangerous l . A serious wash-out took the approaches from Boatman’s Creek bridge and Raglans bridge at Blair’s Road had been washed away. Although a bulldozer was used at the former, the cause of the damage has to be eliminated to make the bridge safe. Repairs were nearly finalised at the Rough River bridge wash-out, these being effected with the aid of machinery from the Public Works Department and the Grey County. In the Maruia area, erosion took place at Woolley Creek bridge, and it was necessary to construct a log crate to throw the river off the bank. Proposals for all flood damage have been submitted to the Public Works Department, Greymouth ,for assistance. The sum of £l3 was collected for nine building permits of a value of £2592. It was reported that dog registration in the Reefton district had been completed, 279 dogs being registered, bringing in .the sum of £B4 1.75. Mr R. Craig’s application for a renewal of a slaughterhouse license was ’granted. The Minister of Health (Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer) wrote acknowledging receipt of the motions passed at the recent protest meeting. It was stated that the resolutions disregarded the facts of the case, and the delay was caused because the board would not face up to its statutory obligations. Cr Archer reported on behalf of the deputation that he had met the Prime Minister —who had been very sympathetic —at Westport. Both he and Hon. P. C. Webb promised every assistance. Cr Archer moved and Cr Williams seconded, all connections to the town water supply be charged £2 10s in future. Cr Archer reported on his investigations at Wellington regarding the new grader. The council decided to have the grader forwarded without delay. The council decided to make enquiries from the Main Highways Board with a view to purchasing a bulldozer. Members agreed with the present labour shortage the machine would be a good proposition for Inangahua. No men or machines were at present available to commence protection work on Cronadun farm lands, was the Soil Erosion and Rivers Control Council’s answer to Mr Archer at his recent interview with that body in Wellington. The council decided to let the foreman arrange for a bulldozer to carry out the work.
