GARVEY’S CREEK ROAD
Good Progress Made DESPITE BAD WEATHER Despite adverse weather conditions, which have hampered operations since the project was commenced, steady progress has been made by the Public Works Department in the construction of the road which, when completed, will open up the rich Garvey’s Creek coalfields. Already about a mile and a-half of the road has been formed and metalled, leaving only 16 chains to be completed. A shortage of carpenters is delaying the construction of the bridge over the creek, but despite this, materials have been brought to the junction of the new road and the main highway, and timber sets are being prefabricated, and the decking has been cut in readiness for when needed. The bridge will be 120 feet long and built of three spans, each 40 feet in length. The timber sets, on which the bridge will be built, are to be placed on concrete foundations. Last week’s heavy rains caused several slips on the new road, but these have been cleared with the use of a bulldozer. Work has been further delayed because the other bulldozer on the job was diverted to the Lewis Pass, where several slips necessitated its use. Although at preesnt it is impossible to give an approximation of the date when the road will be opened, good progress is being made, and if line weather is experienced, the work should be completed in the near future. *
