PRISONER’S JUMP FROM TRAIN PALMERSTON -NORTH, Aug. 23. Jumping from the Napier-Welling-ton express on Wednesday, at one o’clock'just after it had moved . off from the Palmerston North station, James Trevor Morgan, formerly of Palmerston North, who was being escorted by- a warder, made his escape and was at liberty till about 7 p.m., when he was re-arrested. On Tuesday Morgan had been sentenced at Napier to 12 months’ gaol on a charge of having converted a motor-car, valued at £5OO. In Court to-day Morgan was remanded to Wellington on a charge of escaping from custody. TEA ROOMS DESTROYED BY FIRE BLENHEIM, August 23. The Kiosk tearooms in Picton were destroyed by fire about 5.30 this morning. Ten occupants of apartments on the top floor narrowly escaped being trapped, and all had to make a hurried exit in night attire, one of them sprinting a quarter of a mile in pyjamas to sound the fire alarm. When the brigade arrived the building was ablaze and the fire spreading to adjoining premises, but after a long fight the fire was brought under control. Nearly £lOOO worth of stock from an adjoining stationary shop owned by Mr. A. E. Greig was moved on to the street, but the shop was saved though badly damaged, by heat and water. The cause of the fire is unknown.
