BRITISH ELECTIONS
PREDICTED EARLY NEXT YEAR. (Rec. 10.0). LONDON, November 26. Mr Ralph Assheton, in his first public speech since he became Chairman of the C'ons'ervative Party, said: The Conservatives must be prepared for a general election, which might be held next May, or earlier. He added that the people were determined to preserve the Parliamentary constitutional system, and would not tolerate anv. system in Avhich personal liberty was doubtful. The main objection to collectivism wag not that property was in peril, but that liberty would be imperilled. The control which was most irksome was th e control of men and women. He said: “Whatever may be endured during the Avar, we are anxious to regain the right to work where we want, for which we want, and at th e job we want.” Mr Assheton predicted that the British Empire Avould be entering its greatest'period if it had self confidence. After a private meeting of the Commonwealth Party on Friday, Mr J. E. Loverseed, M.P., announced his resignation, and also his desire to be , known at present as an “Independent z Socialist”. (
