BOROUGH AFFAIRS

The Abattoir Committee, at the last meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council recommended: (1) That the Council apply to the Department of Agriculture for permission to increase the charge for use of the abattoir by Is m the case of cattle and 3d in respect of sheep slaughtered at the abattoir, thus making the charge as follows: Cattle 4s 6d; sheep Is 3d. (2> That application be called for the position of assistant-slaughterman, wages and conditions according to award.— Adopted. The Reserves and Cemetery Committee recommended: (1) That the by-laws relating to burial charges be amended by provision that the charge for re-ooening any grave or vault for the interment of cremation ashes should be ten shillings and sixpence (10s 6d). (2) That the Council write to the Grey County Council suggesting that it consider the need for providing more cemeteries in the Grey County, particularly along, the Otira Line, and that in the case of all the cemeteries in the County adequate arrangements be made for the performance of Sexton’s duties. (3) That the Council also write to the Runanga Borough Council suggesting that it consider the need for providing a cemetery in the vcinity of Runanga. (4) That the Engineer make enquiries and report generally on the matter of establishing a crematorium in the vicinity of Greymouth. —Adopted. T’he Mayor said that many people from country districts were buried at Karoro Cemetery and it was obvious that even with the extensions recently made, the cemetery would not last the town more than 20 years if the present rate of interment continued. One difficulty in country cemeteries was that it was difficult to get anyone to dig graves. If the present -position continued the Council might have to raise the burial fees for persons from outside the Borough, if necessary by a private Act of Parliament. No suggestions had been made regarding a site for a new burial ground for Greymouth. The General Committee (including Traffic and Library) made the following recommendations: (1) With reference to the taxis turning in Mackay Street, that the matter be referred to the Traffic Inspector. (2) That the lines indicating the ’bus stand on the west side of Tainui Street be extended six feet. (3) That the ’buses revert to the original route via the Town 'Belt. (4) That a telephone be installed at the Traffic Inspector’s residence. (5) That the weighbridge in Tarapuhi Street be removed, and the matter left to the Engineer for attention. (6) That applications be called for the position of Chief Librarian at a commencing salary of £225, rising to £303, and subject to Court 1 of Arbitration Awards.

In presenting the report the Chairman of the Committee (Mr. J. B. Kent) referred to the helpful .advice given in connection with the library by the Director of the Country Library Service (Mr. G. T. Alley) and it was decided to write thanking Mr. Alley for his assistance. The Westland District Progress League wrote stating that it had discussed a report of its public utilities and amenities sub-committee regarding men’s conveniences, and while it was considered that the number available in Greymouth was sufficient, it was felt that in some cases they needed attention. It was suggested that the attention of the Sanitary Inspector be drawn to the conveniences, including those in hotels.—Referred to the Engineer for attention, the League to be advised that hotel conveniences were not actually public conveniences.
