RUNANGA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent].

The first annual meeting of the Ru-nanga-Rapahoe Surf Life-Saving Club was held in the Miners’ Hall last evening, there being present Messrs G. E. English (president), A. Dearden, M. Gayson, T. Smith, G. Hinks, R. Baxendale, L. Wearn, W. Williamson, W. Williams, J. Lester' and R. Williams (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting wer e read and confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence was received as satisfactory. The balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £52 4s 7d, and the secretray’s report, as follows, were received as satisfactory. Since the Club was formed on February 16 last, meetings have been held on the second Monday of each month, but probonly owing to football practices attendances were not what they might have been. As the result of a collection at the State and private collides the Club benefited to the extent of £25 14s 3d, a total of 206 members, which includes a few outside the coal, mines. A donation of £2O was received from the State Miners’ Union, £5 from Co-op. Mines’ Employees’ Union, £1 Is from the Engine Drivers’ Union, and £9 16s 6d from the N.Z. Surf Life-Saving Association. For the building of a pavilion at Rapahoe we were fortunate in obtaining a Government grant of £7O. A site for the pavilion has been selected and permission to build granted by the Grey; County Council. Blueprints of the buildirig were obtained by Mr J. Lull. Costumes and monograms for the Club have been ordered through the Co-op. Store. A Club monogram, designed by Mr Kent, met with the approval of members. A surf line has been obtained and a reel is almost completed. It is being made in Christchurch and should be arriving in the very near future. Training nights were held in the Druids’ Hall, for. which Mr Len Harrington came out from Greymouth. Training in a hall was not very* successful. After three or four nights it was cancelled until such time as teams can 'get down to the beach. A social committee has been elected, and is putting in good work in raising a social fund. I would like to ask the_members all to get behind the Club in a special effort on the opening of our first season. There is a lot of work to be done for a start, but with the co-operation of all this should not take long. We are getting plenty} of public support, and apart from'being a real benefit to the district, should all be able to knock a good time out of our Club. The N.Z. S'urf Championships are being held in Dunedin this year,, and there is no reason as far as I can see that a team from our Club should not be efficient enough to compete. The balancesheet is as follows: Income: Membership fees £25 19s 3d; donations £36 7s 6d. Expenditure: Membership cards and advertisements £1 16s 9d; stamps 10s 6d; stationary 10s; hall rent (Druids’) 15s; surf line £6 10s; stamps on hand 3s lOd; cash in hand £5 10s 9d; cash in Post Office £46 10s. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr G. E. English (re-elected); vice-president, Mr ADearden; sec-treasurer, Mr R. Williams (re-elected); assistant-sec. Mr W. Williams; trustees, Messrs G. E. English and W. Williamson; committee, the president and secretaries, and Messrs J. Lester, G. Hinks and L. Wearn. The social committee were re-elected. A discussion took place on the arrangements for the building of the pavilion, and it was left to the president to finalise. It was reported by the social committee that good progress had been made with preparations for a concert on November 6. It was decided to ask those ladies of the district desirous of forming a Ladies’ Club to attend the next meeting of the Club. A discussion took place on the time and place of training, and it was decided to hold this over till next meeting. There being no further business, the chairman then closed the meeting.
