UNITED DEBATING CLUB

ANNUAL BANQUET.

The annual banquet of the Greymouth United Debating Club was held . last evening at the club-rooms. The i President, Mr H. W. Hay, read 1 apologies for the absences of Messrs G. G. M. Mitchell, R. Aldridge, and 'N. Page. After the toast of “The King”, the President proposed “Kin--1 dred Clubs”, to which Messrs J. E. Laing (Runanga Debating Club) and M. L. Daly (S’t. Columba' Club) responded. Private Hardie responded to the toast of “The Visitors”, proposed by Mr G. Thompson, and Mr H. A. S. Rollinson proposed “The Judges”, Messrs R. T. Bush and Daly responding, while Mr L. Anderson probosed “Absent Friends”, to which Mr J. Booth replied. “The Prizewinners”, proposed by Mr A. L. McKay, was acknowledged by Messrs G. Gillespie (McLean Cup), and D. McIvor (United Cup). Mr D. Hardie toasted the “Programme Committee”, Mr Rollinson replying, while Mr G. Stiles proposed “The Musicians”, Mr H. Chalk responding, and Mr A. Sumner proposed “The Press”. Recitations were given by Messrs Mclvor (“Ginger Mick”), and Hardie (“Romeo and Juliet a la C'. J. Dennis”), and Mr H. Malham gave the . vocal solo “Because”. Community singing was led by Mr Chalk, who presided at the piano. A very enjoyable gathering concluded with “Auld Lang Syne”, an’d “God Defend New Zealand”.
