MANY ISLANDS
WANTED FOR U.S.A.
In Pacific and Atlantic
(Rec. 5.5) WASHINGTON, Aug. 15. Senator McKellar has introduced a resolution in the Senate calling on the United States to seek to obtain permanent post-war possession of island outposts both in the Pacific and in the Atlantic for peace and security purposes. His resolution said that any treaty or agreement terminating the w.ar with Japan should give to the United States the possession of all of those islands, which, on December 5, 1941, were in the possession of Japan or were mandated to Japan, which lie between the Equator and Thirtieth Parrallel of latitude north, including Formosa Island and the Kyukyu Islands. The resolution also recommends that the United States should acquire, as its permanent possession, the Bermuda Islands and all of the islands west of the West Indies that are now in the possession of European nations. A third recommendation suggests that the President negotiate with Ecuador to obtain the permanent possession of the Galapagos Islands. The resolution was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee. Senator McKellar told the Spnate that his purpose was to let it be known generally what some members of the Senate think.
Senator Reynolds, dhairman of the Military Committee, said that the French and the English should be prepared to transfer to the United States these necessary islands as part payment for their debts to the United States from the last war and • the present war. He added that the same was true of the Netherlands Government after the possession of the Dutch East Indies was restored to them.
