BOMBED BY U.S. PLANES

(Rec. 5.5) WASHINGTON, Aug. 15.

A Pacific Fleet communique reports widespread air raids, stating: Liberators attacked Paramushiro last Friday, and shipping near 1 that Kurile island., and the air strip at Surimachi w.as bombed. Fifteen or twenty fighters intercepted. Three were shot down. Five were probably destroyed. Venturas bombed defence installations at Araido Island on Saturday, and sank a patrol vessel. The same day a single Ventura bombed Shumushu. Liberators attacked Iwo Jima on Sunday, dropping 35 tons of bombs on an airfield and adjacent installations. Mitchells attacked Pagan Island in the northern Marianas on Sunday, hitting gun positions and runways. Rota Island was bombed and strafed on the same day. Venturas bombed Nauru, while Dauntlesses and Corsairs hit remaining enemy positions in the Marshalls.
