WELLINGTON, May 19. The Minister of Supply, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, and the Minister of Broadcasting, Hon. F. Jones, in a joint statement, announce that from next Monday, May 22, all broadcasting stations in New Zealand wni close between 11 a.m. and noon daily on Mondays to Fridays inclusive. This further reduction is necessity owing to increasing demands for electric power. Already last years neak has been exceeded .and fine general tendency will be for the load to increase still further, paiticularly during the next few.months. The new reduction should be erfective in saving power, as the midday peak normally occurs between 11 o’clock and noon. The Ministers state that the need for economising in the use of electricity cannot be over-emphasised, and urge that listeners switch off their sets during the periods when the stations are closed down. This further reduction now reduces the broadcasting hours by two hours daily, Monday to Friday. Indications are that there will be a definite in consumption.
