RUNANGA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. At a public meeting held on Monday it, was decided, on the motion of Mr. S. Morris and Mr. D. Campbell, to send to the Minister of Mines copies of plans and specifications for transforming the Gymnasium Hall into a' public hall. The Department is to be asked to consider making a grant towards the estimated cost of £1,539. The Mayor,- (Mr. E. W. Kennedy), Who presided, said that the small attendance did not warrant a consideration of ways and means of raising funds, nor was there unanimity on the proposal. The matter could again be brought before the public when a reply was received from the Minister.
Mr. F. Oakley presided at the annual meeting of the Runanga School Committee and also present were Mrs. W. Wright and Messrs C. Kennedy, R. Thompson, Rev. Mr. Brittel, and J. Duggan (secretary). Canterbury Education Board advised payment of the monthly capitation allowance of £lO Ils 2d less deductions. The secretary reported that this represented a decrease, without explanation of £1 8s lOd on the usual allowance. The matter is to be considered at the next meeting. In reply to a letter from the Camerons Drama Club regarding the presentation of three plays at Runanga it was decided to state that there would be difficulty in making arrangements for a suitable hall and a supporting programme at present. The use of the school for a polling place at the Borough elections was granted. Accounts totalling £5 3s 8d were passed for payment, and the caretaker was authorised to procure brooms, etc., for school cleaning. Consideration of the purchase of new curtains for the school was deferred.
