BEGGING FOR BEDS

SOLDIERS IN SYDNEY.

(Special to N.Z. Press Assn.) (Rec. 7.5.) SYDNEY, May 16. City police say Australian soldiers on leave in Sydney are begging for beds in lock-up cells while others sleep on railway stations, in parks, and in doorways. Thev cannot fmd room in hostels, and, although they are willing to pay for lodgings, they cannot find room in them. The police say many of these-soldiers are on leave from northern battle stations, and are youths from good homes, with splendid fighting records in Greece, Syria and New Guinea. On recent nights several have been accommodated in cells not occupied by drunks and other prisoners. There are twelve Australian servicemen’s hostels in Sydney and the suburbs, with accommodation for two thousand men. _ .
