The Works Department has, for me third time, called tenders for the; ' erection of a new residence here for the Sergeant of Police, the building': to be erected on the section behind the sergeant’s present house, which was condemned some years ago by the Police Department. ’ Two years a.go, when tenders were called for the: building of a new house, the lowest tender was considered too high and 12 months later further tenders were called with the same result. How the tenders at present being received will compare with those previously tendered is obvious and the probability of the house being ouift remains doubtful. Customs returns for the month of November, with figures tor the same month last year in parenthesis, were as follows: Customs duties, £306 13s 2d (£284 8s); beer, £604 14s 8d (£oso Ts lid); sales tax £499 10s (£452 _.s 9q); war expenses account £iBt>i 17s (£1712 7s Id). Vital statistics at Westport for last month, with figures for the corresponmng month last year, were: Births 7 (11); deaths, 6 (10); mar-

riages 5 (2). ±uast evening, at the Convent of Mercy, some .of the younger pupils of the Sisters gave a most enjoyable recital and the parents wno were pre. sent were delighted with the performances of the children whose efforts reflected credit on their teacher. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte solos, Myra McKendry, Bill Spence, Patricia Ryan, Bin Cummings, Lynette ColvirT, Bill Roche, Lima Miller, George ueddes, Mary Roche, Nova Cummings, Dorothy McKendry, Lynn Elley, Colleen Wilkinson, Nova Phibbs, Kathleen Fogarty, Bob Smitn, Kathleen Ryan, Joe Cummings, Grace Methven, Mary Fox, Phyllis Harney, Billy Smith, Kathleen Casey, Nordica Miller, Eisma de Frieze, Jessie Mullan ana Marilyn Williams; duets, James Martin and Biiiy Smith, Nova Cummings and Nordica Miller; Grace Methven and Dorothy McKendry, Billy and Bob Smith, Lyjnn Elley and Normca Miller, Kath Fogarty and Pat Ryan, Mary and Billy Roche. Songs by the bovs, “Bide Bird," with Kath Casey acqompaniste, and “Fairy Pipers," accompanied by Mary Roche, were most enjoyable, as was also a cnorus by the junior class, wu h Marilyn Wil. liams as accompan’ste. Tne choruses bv the senior girls w th Nova Phibbs and Patricia Ryan at the piano were exceptionally good items. A novelty pianoforte duet, “Chop Sticks.” played bv Marie Lockey~ and Marilyn WTliams, was rendered in a masterly manner. Tr os by ivath Casey, M'arv Roche, and Lvnette Colvin, and Patricia Rvan, Kath Fogarty, and Marilyn Williams Were pleasing items. The final item. “God Defend New Zealand.” was a fitting finale to a grand evening’s entertainment which was thoroughly enjoyed by all those present and most, gratifying to the S’sters of Mercy who are to oe congratulated on the excellent performance of their punils. A second recital will be given this evening and included in the programme will be elocutionary and verse-speaking items.
