IN SEPTEMBER
N.Z. GENERAL ELECTIONS No Bye-elections Meantime BILL BEFORE PARLIAMENT. F.A. WELLINGTON, June 10. A definite indication that the General Election will be held in September was given by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, when introducing the Bye-elections Postponement Bill, when the House resumed at 7.30 tonight. The Bill makes provision for the postponement of the holding of byeelections between now and the General Election. It states that no writ shall be issued for a bye-election to fill any vacancy now existing in the House, or any other vacancy that ma'j| arise- before the General Election.
The Bill also revokes the writ issued on Mav 19, for the election of a member for the Northern Maori electorate, as well as all of the nominations received and the notices issued in respect of that election. The measure is to continue in force until September 30. Explaining the measure, Mr. Fraser said he thought that there would be general agreement that the holding of bye-elections before the General Election would be a waste of time, money and effort. Replying to a question by Mr. J. A. Lee, Mr. Fraser said that the BUI indicated that a General Election must be held before September 30. Answering a query; by Mr. S. G. Holland, Mr. Fraser indicated that September was the month in which he expected that the General Election would be held. He expressed regret for inconvenience that would be caused in connection with the Maori contest, which already had commenced, but he thought that this legislation was well advised. The Bill was read the first time.
