Amended patents, designs, trademarks, ■ and copyright emergency regulations were gazetted last night. They tighten up trading with the enemy regulations so far as patent, rights are concerned, and bring New Zealand regulations into line with amended regulations in Britain.

An official of the Westland Retail Shop Assistants’ Union, stated yesteri day that the Union, associated itself with other Unions in their farewell to Mr. C. B. Rawlins, Inspector of Factories, who is leaving for Invercargill. They regretted losing Mr. Rawlins and appreciated very much all that he had done for them.
Replying to a question in Parliament, Hon. D. G. Sullivan stated uiat whether or not there was an early extension of rationing of foodstuffs in common use, the Food Controller would be pleased to receive representations from, and to consult with, women's organisations for the purpose of fixing a scale of diet calculated to conform to the health needs of the people. The Greymouth Women’s Institute held their June meeting in Wesley Hall recently. Mrs. Green presided. Two new members were welcomed. I’he motto for the month was “A Soft Answer Turneth Away Wrath.” A demonstration on glove-making was given by Miss Black. Competition winners were: Marigold cake-, Miss Pendergast 1, Mrs. Green 2; Autumn foliage and berries: Miss Pendergast 1 Mrs. Smith 2. The following was handed in for the month; Three polo pullovers, 6 scarves, 7 balaclavas.

An amendment, to the Building Emergency Regulations, gazetted this week, makes it an offence against tne Supply Control Emergency Regulations, 1939, to proceed with any constructional work in respect of which a permit is required from a local authority, without first obtaining permission Similarly, it makes it' an offence to do work otherwise than in accordance with a permit. The Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, said: it had been found that where buildings have been commenced without a permit, penalties cannot be applied under the Supply Control Regulations. The only possible action has been under local building by laws, and penalties in those cases he said, had been inadequate.—P.A.
Deposits in National War Savings on the West Coast last week included £3,676 3s from Greymouth, £514 from Hokitika, and £233' 2s from Blackball. With accumulated savings, seven of the 15 postal offices reached their quotas, these being Greymouth, Blackball, Hokitika, Moana, Reefton, Waiuta, and Ross. With more than four times the quota, the district success was also gained. Moana, with investments of £lO exceeded its quota by £4. Offices showing deficiencies in the week’s business were as follows (deficiencies indicated in parentheses) Runanga, £3B 19s (£62 is?; Reefton, £42 ISs (£4O 2s); Brunnerton, £l6 5s (£33 15s); Ku mar a, £3 os (£27 17s); Ikamatua, £3 17s 6d (£l2 2s 6d); Jackson Bay £1 2s (£lO lbs); Waiuta, £25 10s (£9 10s); nil (£9); Stillwater, 10s (£8 10s), Otira £6 Is (£7 19s); Ross, £ol Ils (9s)? Mr. J. A. Murdoch has received a letter from Hon. J. O’Brien stating that he has been advised by the Under Secretary for Mines (Mr. Benney) that the Department will grant a subsidy to local bodies covering the amount of royalty and rates previously paid on the land occupied by the Dobson and Wallsend mines. Mr. Murdoch had made representations on the matter on behalf of the Greymouth Harbour Board, and in his report to the Board he referred to the manner in which Mr. O’Brien had handled' the: matter. A vote of thanks to Mr. O’Brien was . passed. The Brunner Borough Council, which would also have suffered a loss of revenue, has had assurances tnat the matter will be equitably adjusted, but otherwise no official word has bee.n received. “F. 8. does not only stand for Frank Bell’s—it stands for Fire Brigade. Runanga Volunteer Fire Brigade hold its first annual Ball on Friday, June 18, when you can be sure of a good night’s dancing.— Advt. The Blaketown Women’s Institute held their June meeting on Tuesday, Mrs. Mann presiding over a good attendance. Owing to the secretary being absent through sickness, Mrs. Innis was elected temporary secretary. Three new members, Mrs. Parmenter, Mrs. Manson, and Mrs. Groom, were .admitted and welcomed. After the remits and business were discussed a very pleasant half-hour was spent in the form of an “Irish social. Mrs. West gave a talk on Killarney. Lorraine Graham danced the Irish Jig, and Mrs. Innis and Mrs Brown sang songs of Ireland, i.irs. Murphy being accompanist. The roll call “Schoolboy howlers” brougnt forth some humourous answers. Winners of the competitions were: Plum pudding: Mrs. Moreland 1, Mrs. Stewart 2, Mrs. Graham 3; Felt brooch: Mrs. Innis I,' Mrs. Stewart 2 and 3; Parsnips: Mrs. Herring 1, Mrs. Thompson 2., A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Lane, Lyons, Longstaff, Pierring, Kelly, Hodgkinson and Innis.

Mrs. F. M. Dennehy presided over the mcnthljl meeting of the Greymouth -Plunket Society on Wednesday. Also present were Mesdames Smith, Fahey, Bunt, Roud, Macaulay, Boucher, Kitchingham, Beahy, Barrett, Fairmaid and McCarthy. lhe Nursing Adviser to the Council (Miss N P Fitzgibbon) advised that she would arrive on Saturday. Mrs. Taylor (Moana) was elected to the committee. The attention of members was drawn to a rule of the Society which precludes committees or members of Plunket societies, as such, accepting representation or recognition on any other organisation or committee. Districts were allotted for the annual collection. The Nurses’ report for May was as follows: —Headquarters: Visits to homes, old 107, new 28. To Rooms, adults 254, babies 204, pre-school 52.
