SLY GROG CASE. WELLINGTON, May 20. The Magistrate (Mr. Stilwell), in a reserved decision, to-day, decided not to confiscate the £IUUU worth or liquor *in the case against Raymond Spencer, who, yesterday, was sentenced to one month s imprisonment tor illegal sale of liquor. CHECKING ELECTORAL ROLLS. WELLINGTON, May 20. Registrars ot Electors throughout New Zealand are at present busily engaged in the work of ‘ demising the electoral rolls. Due to the cooperation of the Post - and Telegraph Department, Registrars have knowledge of those electors who are believed to have left their district and inquiries are being confirmed mainly to electors who come under this headIDS. Forms of inquiry as to residence are being sent out and where these notices are returned unclaimed notices of objection are then posted under registered cover. If these second notices are returned, “gone, no address ” they serve as authority for the corresponding names to be removed from the roll. AUCKLAND FIRE. AUCKLAND, May 20. ■Part of the premises occupied by the Second N.Z.E.F. Association in the city, on the second floor of Queen’s Arcade was destroyed by lire in the earlyl hours of this morning. The furnishings, including a radio and piano were damaged beyond repair, and the floor and ceiling .were extensively damaged. Four brigades fought ‘the blaze and quickly prevented the spread. Stocks in tne shops on the ground and first hoor of the building were slightly damaged by water. The brigade completed its task with only a few thousand gallons of water which . was economised owing to the shortage. NORTHERN MAORI BY-ELECTION. WELLINGTON, May 20. Nominations of candidates for the Northern Maori by-election, to fill the vacancy in the House of Representatives caused by the death of Mr. Paikea, will close on June 2 and in the event of a poll being necessary, this will be held on Jun 19. TAXI DRIVER ROBBED. AUCKLAND, May 20. American authorities co-operated with the Auckland nolice on Tuesday night, in a search for two men, said to be wearing uniforms, and alleged to have robbed a city taxidriver of £2 ss, after he had driven them to Otahuhu. The taxidriver, F. A. Osborne, reported to the police that about 7 p.m. he was hailed in Symonds Street by two uniformed men, who asked to be driven to Otahuhu. They directed him to drive to Portage Road, down which the car went some distance before they asked him to stop. Osborne alleged that when the car pulled up, one man presented a revolver at him and ordered him to “part out.” All the change he had in his pockets he gave to the serviceman, but retained a roll of bank notes secreted in an inner pocket. No attempt was. made to search or assault him. He was told to drive off and warned not to go to the police, but he drove directly to the police station to report the robbery Prompt action was taken and an American Provost Officer made his organisation fully available in an endeavour to find the men. A serviceman is said to have been found with a revolver, and detained on returning to camp. A thorough investigation bv the American authorities is in progress.
