THEFT IN EGYPT
SOLDIER PLACED ON PROBATION P.A. AUCKLAND, May 20. A returned soldier who admitted a charge of bringing into New Zealand, stolen goods valued at £lOO, the property' l of a resident of Maadi, Egypt was placed on probation by Mr. Justice Fair, to-day for a term of three years, and ordered to pay £lO costs. His Honour said the theft was deliberately carried out on a large scale by the prisoner and his companion. Part of the property might, have been removed to be kept safe for the owner, but, having done that, the prisoner appropriated a large portion of valuable property, which was in the most convenient form for taking away. The immeeij-
ate danger oi Axis attack being passed, he' yielded, to the temptation. It was an offence, serious in itself, and it tended to sully the high reputption of New Zealanders in Africa. This reputation was one New Zealand had reason to be proud of. The condition of release on probation .n view of the prisoner’s youth and previous good character would oe that sentence be susnended.
