GIVES LIFE TO SAVE MATES. (Special). (Rec. 8.45.) SYDNEY, February 24. Myer Levin, who, as Bombardier in Captain Colin Kelly’s plane released bombs that sank the Japanese battleship Haruna on December 10, 1941 in the Far East, gave his life to save three fellow American airmen, he having been killed in the Southwest Pacific area on January 7. when a Flying Fortress, when returning from a long-range reconnaissance, ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea. When last seen, Levin was grasping; safety catches on the planes raft. He was apparently, able to release it before being knocked unconscious, and, by so doing, he saved the lives of three survivors of the crash. These 7 three men were thirteen hours on the raft before being rescued. Levin had fought through the Philippines campaign. During the Coral Sea battle he was a member of a plane crew who had to bail out over Australian territory. Levin landed on an anthill, and for two hours he lav there unconscous. being badly bitten by ants. When, following the attack on the Haruna. Kelly’s plane was shot up by Zeros, Levin also had to bail out.
